Your writing, explained.

Margin does not operate a server that receives your notes, and it does not send them to a third-party AI provider. Some Apple system features, and actions you choose, can move information off your device. This page says which.

Your writing and stored information

Margin stores note titles and text, note identifiers, creation and update dates, and suggestions you have dismissed so it can avoid repeating them. This information is saved on your device. When iCloud is available, Margin uses Apple's CloudKit service to sync it through your Apple account's private database.

Formatting you apply — headings, emphasis and lists — is stored in a separate record on the device where you applied it. In this release that record is not synced; your note's words travel through iCloud, its styling does not.

Margin has no separate account system, advertising, or analytics SDK inside the app. The app does not track you across other apps or websites. App preferences, such as your chosen mode, remain on the device.

Intelligence on your device

Margin's suggestions use processing on your device. Your writing is not sent to a developer-operated AI service or a third-party AI provider. When Apple Intelligence is available, Margin uses Apple's on-device model; when it is unavailable, built-in rules can offer suggestions. Ask Margin retrieves excerpts from your notes rather than sending questions to an external answer service.

Questions and reflections are ways to revisit your writing. They are not independently verified factual answers. Choosing Focus, Explore or Wonder changes the kind of question asked; it does not change where processing happens.

iCloud, Spotlight and Siri

When iCloud is available, copies of notes and their stored information can exist in your Apple account's iCloud storage and on other devices using that account. Sync depends on Apple's services, connectivity and your settings.

Margin makes note text and related information available to the device's Spotlight and App Intents system so search and Siri can find or act on notes. Your device's search and Siri settings control how those system features surface and use it. Margin currently has no separate switch to disable its system indexing.

Apple's services and privacy terms apply when you use iCloud, Spotlight, Siri, dictation or other system features. Describing Margin's own intelligence as on-device does not mean every action performed by Apple's services stays on your device. See Apple's privacy information.

Sharing, keeping and deleting notes

Share as text opens the system share sheet with a copy of the note's title and text. Export Word document creates a .docx file containing the note and its formatting, which you can save or send. In both cases you choose the destination, and the chosen app or service then handles that copy under its own privacy practices.

You can delete a note from the note list after confirming. Margin requests removal of its search entry, and deletion can sync to other devices when iCloud is available. Indexing and sync may take time to reflect the change.

Share or export a copy before deleting anything you need. Margin has no Recently Deleted folder or restore command. Removing the app does not necessarily remove copies held in iCloud. Review your Apple account's iCloud storage settings to manage app data. Apple's backup and retention behaviour depends on your account and system settings. Copies shared to other apps are managed by those destinations.

Diagnostics, support and this website

The app includes local performance timing markers to help diagnose editor behaviour. They contain no note text or note identifiers. Margin has no custom analytics or diagnostic-upload service in the app. Apple's optional system diagnostics are separate and depend on your settings.

This information site is hosted with ChatGPT Sites. It has no account form, note editor, contact form or comment system, and it never receives your notes. The hosting provider may process website requests to operate its service under its own policies; see OpenAI's privacy policy. Website hosting is separate from the app's storage of your notes.

On thinkmargin.co.uk, we use Cloudflare Web Analytics to understand visits, page views and page performance. Its JavaScript beacon sends website usage and performance information to Cloudflare, including the pages viewed, referring sites, country, and browser and device type.
